Daniel J. Herberger, a retired state court officer, died Thursday in Cleveland Clinic in Ohio following a short illness. He was 59.
A Buffalo native, Herberger graduated from Lafayette High School in 1968. He lived in Strykersville.
He was an Erie County sheriff’s deputy from April 8, 1974 until he joined the state court office staff two years ago.
Herberger worked out regularly at the downtown Buffalo Athletic Club most days before court opened and suffered a massive heart attack Oct. 12. He was flown to the Cleveland Clinic after it was determined he was in need of a heart transplant.
Herberger was the first court worker Senior Erie County Judge Michael L. D’Amico met at his swearing-in almost 23 years ago.
“He is someone we are going to miss for a long time,” the judge said.
Surviving are his wife of 10 years, the former Mary E. Kelly; a daughter, Kelli Y.; a son, Daniel P.; his mother, Yvonne Engle; and two sisters, Donna Snyder and Yvette Ford.
Prayers will be said at 8:45 a. m. Tuesday in Amigone Funeral Home, 6050 Transit Road, Amherst, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 in St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 5271 Clinton St.
