The journey of Louis and Carmene Buchheit ended just as it had begun 60 years ago. They never went long without each other.
Louis John Buchheit Sr., a retired Ford Motor Co. employee, died June 10 at the VNA Hospice, Vero Beach, Fla., after a short illness. His death occurred on the eve of what would have been the couple’s 60th wedding anniversary and just weeks after the death of his wife. He was 84.
His wife, the former Carmene Didio, a retired business manager and volunteer, died unexpectedly May 21 in the Indian River Medical Center in Vero Beach. She was 85.
The couple was married June 11, 1949 after being set up on a blind date the previous year. In 1981, they moved from Eggertsville to Naples, Fla., where they lived until relocating to Vero Beach two years ago.
Born in Buffalo, Mr. Buchheit graduated from St. Joseph Collegiate Institute in 1943 and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Buffalo in 1950.
He served as an Army Air Forces B-24 navigator during World War II, retiring from the Air Force Reserve as a colonel in 1962.
For nearly 30 years, Mr. Buchheit worked as a financial analyst at Ford’s Woodlawn Stamping Plant, retiring in 1981.
After the couple’s move to Florida, Mr. Buchheit worked in real estate and remained active until three years ago.
Mrs. Buchheit, who also was born in Buffalo, graduated from Fosdick-Masten Park High School in 1941. She also studied at the University of Buffalo.
She worked as a business manager for her father’s company, Didio Brothers Cut Glass, before spending 10 years as a personnel manager with Wm. Hengerer Co. in Eastern Hills Mall.
For 20 years, Mrs. Buchheit volunteered with the Girl Scouts of Western New York in the Eggertsville area. She served as troop leader and chairwoman of the cookie drive.
Mr. and Mrs. Buchheit enjoyed traveling and spending summer vacations with their family in Western New York. Their son, Louis Jr., described his parents as close and dependent on each other, and they had been looking forward to celebrating their 60th anniversary. In addition to their son, they are survived by two daughters, Clare Buchheit-Edson and Kim Buchheit-Robinson. Mrs. Buchheit is also survived by a sister, Alva Jean Muther.
A celebration of their life will be held at 11 a. m. Aug. 20 in St. Joseph-University Catholic Church, 3269 Main St.
