New guides on eating local fish sought

Story tools:

NEW YORK (AP)—Sen. Charles E. Schumer is asking the federal government to update its guidelines for warning the public about the dangers of regularly eating fish caught in local waterways.

Schumer, D-N. Y., said Tuesday that some fish in New York City’s waters have been found to contain cancer-causing chemicals such as mercury and PCBs.

He said more low-income New Yorkers—in an effort to make ends meet—are eating fish they catch from the East and Hudson rivers and other waterways.

He also called on the Environmental Protection Agency to review its standards for what is a safe amount of fish to consume.
