Guantanamo detainee gets 2010 trial date

Story tools:

NEW YORK (AP)—A September 2010 trial has been set for a Guantanamo detainee charged in the 1998 bombings of two U. S. embassies in Africa.

U. S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan in Manhattan set the Sept. 13, 2010, trial date at a Thursday hearing for Ahmed Ghailani. Authorities allege he was a bomb-maker, document forger and aide to Osama bin Laden. The attacks at embassies in Tanzania and Kenya killed 224 people, including 12 Americans.

Ghailani was brought to the United States last month. The government has not decided whether to seek the death penalty if it wins a conviction.

The Tanzanian, captured in Pakistan in 2004, had been held at the U. S. naval prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, since 2006.
