State may restrict sale of ‘bug bombs’
ALBANY (AP) — New York state is moving to take “bug bombs” off store shelves after a federal report noted misuse of the indoor foggers can cause explosions and illness.
State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Pete Grannis said Friday the agency will start classifying the foggers as a restricted- use product when their pesticide registrations come up for review shortly. That means only certified pesticide applicators will be able to get them.
A report published Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted 466 illnesses or injuries related to indoor foggers in eight states — including 123 in New York — between 2001 and 2006. Most were described as minor and attributed to using too many foggers or not leaving the room.
