Cuomo warns Comcast on child porn access

Story tools:

ALBANY (AP) — State Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo has notified Comcast Corp. that the state will take legal action against the media company if it doesn’t agree to eliminate access to child pornography through its Internet service.

New York already has reached such agreements with AT&T, AOL, Verizon Communications, Sprint Nextel Corp. and Time Warner Cable.

Last week, Comcast joined with nearly the entire cable industry and 48 state attorneys general to sign an unprecedented anti-porn agreement.

But Cuomo was not among those supporting that agreement, which Cuomo’s office said was not as tough on online child pornography as his own code.

While the agreement covered Web sites with child pornography, its language was weak on eliminating news groups — where illegal images can proliferate.

“Comcast has been working with the New York attorney general, and we expect to become a signatory to his agreement as well,” said Sena Fitzmaurice, Comcast spokeswoman.
