Professor to speak

Linda E. Thomas, professor of theology and anthropology at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, will discuss “The African-American Church and Politics in 2009” at 7:30 p. m. Thursday in the Regis Room of the Richard E. Winter Student Center at Canisius College.

Thomas is author of “Under the Canopy: Ritual Process and Spiritual Resilience in South Africa” and “Living Stones in the Household of God.”

Three local clergy—the Rev. Michael Chapman, the Rev. Roderick Hennings and the Rev. Richard Stenhouse—will offer responses.

Lecture, meditation

The Buffalo Mindfulness Community will sponsor a lecture from 7:30 to 9 p. m. Nov. 6 and a meditation seminar from 9:30 a. m. to 5 p. m. Nov. 7 in the Business Building at Daemen College, 4380 Main St., Amherst.

The sessions are on the topic of “The Seven Factors of Enlightenment as taught by the Buddha.”

“Iron Sharpens Iron,” a national men’s conference, begins at 8:30 a. m. today in the Wesleyan Church of Hamburg, 4999 McKinley Parkway, Hamburg.

The conference, sponsored by Christian Service Brigade Ministries and Camp Hickory Hill, will feature two keynote speakers, Chuck Stecker, founder and president of A Chosen Generation in Littleton, Colo., and Ken Canfield, director of the Center for the Family at Pepperdine University and founder of the National Center for Fathering.

Tickets are $55 and $29 for students.

Baker award

Sister Johnice Rzadkiewicz, founder and director of the Response to Love Center, will receive the Father Baker Service to Youth Award at a reception at 6:30 p. m. Nov. 6 in the Hyatt Regency Buffalo.

The event kicks off the 2009 Friends of Father Baker campaign to support special projects at Baker Victory Services in Lackawanna.

Holy Hour, concert

Worship leader and singer Jim Cowan will give a concert and participate in a Eucharistic Holy Hour at 7 p. m. Wednesday in St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, 1140 Abbott Road.

A free-will offering will be collected.

World Day of Prayer

The Women’s Auxiliary of the Great Lakes Baptist Association will host the annual World Day of Prayer service at 7 p. m. Nov. 2 in Calvary Baptist Church, 1184 Genesee St.

Worship-music tour

The Deeper Worship Tour will play a concert of worship music at 7 p. m. Nov. 6 in Eastern Hills Wesleyan Church, 8445 Greiner Road, Clarence.
