Youth, adult retreats

Hellenic Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, 146 Utica St., will offer its fall youth and adult retreats Friday and next Saturday, featuring the Rev. Iakovos Olechnowicz of Traverse City Orthodox Mission Church in Michigan as speaker.

Stanley Hauerwas, professor of theological ethics at Duke Divinity School, will present the annual Staley Lecture at 8 p. m. Monday in Houghton College’s Wesley Chapel, One Willard Avenue, Houghton, Allegany County.

Hauerwas will discuss “War and the American Difference: A Theological Assessment.”

Mass workshop

The Rev. Peter Stravinskas, Catholic apologist, author and speaker, will give a workshop on the Mass at 4 p. m. Sunday in St. John Gualbert School cafeteria.

The author of “The Bible and the Mass” will guide participants through a deeper appreciation of the Catholic liturgy.

‘Passionate Pursuit’

The “Passionate Pursuit Conference,” sponsored by Victory Christian Church of Lockport, will be held Oct. 22-24 in the Conference Center Niagara Falls, 101 Old Falls St., Niagara Falls, with speakers Minister Judy Jacobs, Pastor Tommy Reid, Pastor Ron Friedersdorf and the Rev. Helen Lowery.

Bishop to lecture

“Theology, Social Justice and the Life of the Poor: A Bishop’s Experience” will be the subject of a lecture by Bishop Alvaro Ramazzini of San Marcos, Guatemala, at 7 p. m. Oct. 19 in the main dining room of Christ the King Seminary, 711 Knox Road, Aurora.

Genealogy seminar

The Buffalo stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will host a Family History Seminar from 9 a. m. to 2 p. m. next Saturday in the stake center at 1424 Maple Road, Amherst.

The seminar will feature guided access to online genealogy resources, as well as specific workshops on Irish, Italian, Scandinavian and Polish research.

“We believe that all family members—those living, those past and those future—share an enduring bond that reaches across the generations. This is why we do family research ourselves, and why we encourage others to do it also,” said Buffalo stake president Stephen Free.

The event is geared toward the general public and all are welcome; admission and parking are free.

Clarence pilgrimage

The Rev. Judith Brown Bryan, a spiritual leader at Clarence First Presbyterian Church, 96775 Main St., will lead a pilgrimage on Main Street in Clarence following the 10 a. m. worship service Oct. 18. For details, call the church office, 759-8396.
