Lecture series announced

A Nobel Peace Prize winner, Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States and a gay prelate at the center of a split within the Episcopal Church will be among the notable speakers in the 2009 Interfaith Lecture Series at Chautauqua Institution this summer.

The series kicks off the week of June 28 with the theme, “The Gnostic Gospels—A Different View of Christianity,” featuring Elaine Pagels, author and religious history professor at Princeton University.

Week Two will focus on “The Jewish Way of Being,” with Rabbi Joseph Telushkin, author of “Jewish Literacy.”

Author and Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel will discuss the theme of “What Makes Us Moral: An Abrahamic Perspective?” at 10:45 a. m. and at 2 p. m. July 27. The Rev. V. Gene Robinson, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New Hampshire since 2003, also will speak the same week, at 2 p. m. July 29.

The Hon. Husain Haqqani, former adviser to the late Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and current Pakistani ambassador to the U. S., is slated to participate in Week Six, at 2 p. m. Aug. 4, on the theme, “The Influence of Religion and Culture on Contemporary Diplomacy.”

Other speakers in the series include the Rev. Jim Wallis, founder and editor of Sojourners magazine; Dr. Andrew Newberg, University of Pennsylvania professor and author of “How God Changes Your Mind;” and Rabbi Michael Nelchior, Chief Rabbi of Norway and a former Israeli Knesset member.

Bishop Edward U. Kmiec of the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo will ordain nine men as permanent deacons at 10 a. m. today in St. Joseph Cathedral, 50 Franklin St.

To be ordained are: Michael Bochiechio, Williamsville; William J. Boneberg, Westfield; Timothy

E. Chriswell, Cheektowaga; David C. Erhart, Leroy; Daniel U. Golinski, Cheektowaga; Thomas

R. Healey, Amherst; Gary M. Hoover, East Amherst; Carlton M. Koester, Hamburg; and Samuel

G. Puleo, Orchard Park.

Pastoral anniversary

Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 187 E. Ferry St., will have a 39th pastoral anniversary celebration for the Rev. Robert E. Baines Sr., pastor, at 5 p. m. next Saturday in the Van C. Fellowship Hall.

Interfaith conference set

“Religious Guidance for the Current Economic Crisis” will be the subject of an interfaith conference from 2 to 5 p. m. June 14 in the Millennium Hotel, 2040 Walden Ave., Cheektowaga.

Speakers representing various faith perspectives will try to answer the question, “Can we turn to God for guidance that can help us in these trying times?”

The speakers will address this issue from the perspectives of the economic philosophies derived from the teachings and guidance of their Holy Scriptures and religious teachers.

The conference is sponsored by Buffalo Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.

A 2009 Catholic Communication Campaign collection will be taken in parishes of the Diocese of Buffalo next Saturday and June 14. The collection benefits projects such as the “For Your Marriage” campaign, the Western New York Catholic newspaper, televised Masses from St. Joseph cathedral, the diocese’s growing presence on the Internet and other communications efforts.

Olczak is celebrant

The Rev. Jozef Olczak, provincial of the Pauline Order in the United States, will be main celebrant at a 1:15 p. m. Mass on June 14 in Corpus Christi Church, 199 Clark St., to celebrate the solemnity of Corpus Christi, the feast day commemorating the sacrament of Holy Eucharist at the Last Supper.

A procession with the Blessed Sacrament will follow, starting at St. Stanislaus Church at 123 Townsend St., stopping at two outdoor altars and concluding at Corpus Christi. Call 896-1050 for details.

Madrid tp speak

Patrick Madrid, radio host, author and editor of Envoy Magazine, will speak at the Agape series meeting at 7 p. m. June 15 in Our Lady of Pompeii Church, 158 Laverack Ave., Lancaster.

Topic is “Search and Rescue:How to bring your family and friends into, or back into, the Catholic Church.”
