The NeXt crew: A few random facts

NeXt Correspondent

Story tools:

Y ou already know that the correspondents you’ve read material from this year love writing/photography/ political cartooning, but what don’t you know? Could they possess talents or collect odd items that have nothing to do with their contributions to NeXt? The answer is yes; they can, and they do. (Note: Not every correspondent could be included.)

THE FRESHMEN:

• Alexandra Duncan could surprise many people with her extensive knowledge on hockey. In other words, “don’t judge a book by its cover.”

• Sarah Hanson reads fiction novels nonstop and even writes Young Adult fiction. Sarah Dessen is her idol.

• Ally Hart quite simply “Ès” Nutella on toast.

•Colin Reboy loves music and theater. He recently won the Blossom Cohan award at the Kenny Awards at Shea’s.

•Aman Shamaa has left our neck of the woods and traveled halfway around the world. Twice.

THE SOPHOMORES:

•Haley Keeley once wrote an entire novel in a month.

• Cypress Marrs composes catchy pop songs whilst riding her bike.

• Derik Wagner’s favorite author is Dan Brown. (Much different than Sarah Dessen!)

THE JUNIORS:

• Sarah Attridge can successfully rap the lyrics to most Salt-N-Pepa songs.

• Elizabeth Benz has no problem with catching snakes, toads and even jellyfish, but spiders terrify her.

•Mary Best knows the choreography to Backstreet Boys and N*SYNC songs and feels the need to display this at school dances.

•Julia Birkinbine has been a competitive swimmer for a decade. The irony? Her biggest fear is drowning.

•Courtney Denk writes a “to-do” list on her arm every day and is in a techno band with her pal Jaime.

• Alyssa Frey fears the number 23 and any numbers that, when combined, make 23.

•Hans Glick often thinks in some kind of foreign accent when taking a difficult exam.

•Marc Luko occasionally sings and talks to himself when out on long runs.

•Nell Meosky’s favorite foods include black olives, potato lasagna, dark chocolate and feta cheese.

•Carlene Miller once went bowling in Minnesota with 88 girls wearing tiaras. “I, on the other hand, was not wearing a tiara,” she said.

• Josh Riefler once took a speed-chute down the Great Wall. “That was really fun,” he said.

•Laura Rumschik played Roller Coaster Tycoon obsessively as a kid and dreamed of designing a coaster for real. Now she prefers to simply ride ’em.

• Alexander Vilardo once spent the first period of a Sabres/Canadiens game in the press box with Rick Jeanneret and Harry Neale.

• Taylor Watson can spot historical inaccuracies with anything that deals with the Tudors.

• Tracey Willmott watches “Deadliest Catch” on Discovery Channel religiously. She wants to go crabbing with them someday.

THE SENIORS:

• Rebecca Bratek found a niche: planning things. Surprise parties– even a Battle of the Bands.

• Sophie Friedman climbed Mount Fuji a few years ago. “It was pretty cold–and VERY steep,” she said.

• Joelle Hochulski dreams of working as a Disney Princess at Walt Disney World.

•Colin Knoer owns and drives a blue moped. People laugh, but it gets more than 100 miles to the gallon. (“He who laughs last –” he commented.)

•Caitlin Kubala is a walking television encyclopedia. SIDE NOTE: Colin Knoer and Caitlin have been dating for about six months. (We have a NeXt couple!)

•Chelsea Orcutt used to write acceptance speeches for when she became president. (Addressing the importance of Harry Potter books and middle school dances.)

•JasonSilverstein a k a “The Black Plague” has attempted all year to begin a rap group called The Nuremberg Trials. “People have told me I’ve got skills,” he said.

• Jennifer Werbitsky often speaks in the tone and dialect of pirates. “ARRRRRGH.”

Not only can these people do what they do for NeXt, they can supply fun random facts about themselves. Farewell and congratulations, seniors.

Emily Steves is a sophomore at Gowanda who likes to dance while she waits in line for something.
