TREAT YOURSELF

The weather is getting warmer outside (finally!), and that means one thing (to us): ice cream season! Which means Baskin-Robbins is right on time with its third consecutive year of “Candy Bar Madness.” This year ice cream is done Snickers-and M&M-style, with the option of a regular cone or sundae. The Snickers ice cream is made with caramel ice cream, Snickers (duh!) and a swirled caramel ribbon. The M&Ms treat is chocolate ice cream with M&M’s, chocolate chip cookie dough and fudge ribbon. The sundaes come with the usual sundae fare: three scoops of the aforementioned ice cream, caramel or hot fudge, whipped cream and more.

You can get the treats at your local Baskin-Robbins through May 3.

FOR GIRLS: THE TRIPLE BIND

For all of today’s stressed-out teenage girls, Stephen Hinshaw’s “The Triple Bind” (Ballantine Books, $25, 256 pages) may offer an explanation, if not an answer.

Hinshaw, a psychologist and researcher, examines what he calls the “triple bind” – three very difficult and contradictory expectations that our society has for girls. In short, girls are expected to be successful in traditionally feminine areas (e. g., they should be nice, empathetic, and facilitate good relationships), be strong in roles that are culturally male (e. g., being competitive in school, athletic, ambitious, and assertive), and still manage to fit the “perfect” mold cast by the media and popular culture.

“The Triple Bind” is well-written, and tackles the topic in a logical and easy-to-follow order. Hinshaw cites popular entertainment in many of his examples, causing the reader to look at “Enchanted” and “America’s Next Top Model” with a new, more critical eye. He addresses the issues posed by over-scheduling, cyber culture, and the changing face of today’s role models, among other key areas. Overall, Hinshaw covers the problem that he describes as being one “with no name” with skill and compassion.

As a teenage girl, I did not completely agree with all of Hinshaw’s statements, but there were also many topics that I felt he described very accurately – namely, the exponentially increasing pressures caused by college applications and the self-objectification of girls. It is an interesting take on modern life for the young American woman, and, though sometimes frightening, provides hope for the future. “I believe there is [a solution],” writes Hinshaw, “ ... but we can’t simply wait for the culture to transform itself.”

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“The times in my life I’ve gotten carried away I’ve regretted; I get home and realize it’s ridiculously trendy and isn’t me at all. If it’s not able to be chucked in the washing machine or have baby food on it, I regret buying it.”

– Isla Fisher, on her shopping past, in People magazine.
