Taylor Firth had just placed 13th in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. Then a spam e-mail to her skating coaches invited her to audition for the lead role in a remake of 1978 movie, “Ice Castles.” At 17, she finds herself a leading lady in the teen romance, coming out on DVD Tuesday.

This past weekend was one of anticipation. The diehard sports lovers were treated to the Pro Bowl, where the top athletes in the National Football League compete against each other, and the diehard music fans were treated to the 52nd Grammy Awards or, in this year’s case, the Grammy Show.

W hen the usual opening announcements were delivered in both English and Spanish, the audience guessed that something was up. When the house lights dimmed and the sounds of a radio being tuned emanated, switching from hip-hop beats to slow Latin salsa, the audience knew something was a little different. Following the opening title song, which used rap to introduce the characters and their struggles in New York City’s Washington Heights, the audience was certain they had never seen a musical quite like “In the Heights.”
