Design tip:

Don’t be afraid to mix up your place settings when entertaining. Plates and other dishes don’t have to match. Instead, pick a unifying element in your table decor, such as a color, theme or texture, and have fun with it. Matched place settings instantly create a formal mood, but mixing up place settings can be perfect for a hip get-together, and is creative and visually interesting, reports McClatchy Newspapers.

So go ahead: Add a piece of your grandmother’s blue china to your own white plates.

Peace, baby

Here’s something a little different for the upcoming holiday season: Pottery Barn is offering glittery peace sign tree ornaments.

Ornaments are priced $4 to $6. The store at Walden Galleria has a tree up that is completely decorated with them.

Onthe calendar

Two weekend events:

• The Elmwood Village Association’s Mass Appeal fashion event takes place tonight in Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church, 875 Elmwood Ave. Fashions from local designers and Elmwood Village stores will be featured.

Doors open at 7 p. m. For ticket information and details, visit www.elmwoodvillage.org. Or call 881-0707. Tickets, $10 or $30, will be available at the door.

• Jillian Lewis, star of the fourth season of Bravo’s “Project Runway,” is having a trunk show from 1 to 5 p. m. Saturday at the

And finally…

“The dining table is intended for china, glassware, utensils and linens. Key chains, lipstick, the mail and children’s toys are best placed elsewhere at mealtime.” Kate Spade, designer and author
