About faces: Curious about what your ancestors looked like? Have an old photograph – or a boxful – but no idea of who the people in it might be?

You’ll want to check out two nifty Web sites, Dead Fred and Ancient Faces, both of which let you browse through old photos, search for family names and help others identify the mysterious faces in antique photos.

At www.deadfred.com and www.ancientfaces.com.

Regular Janes and average Joes: McGlinchey’s Tavern is to Philadelphia what the Pink Flamingo is to Buffalo: an old, dank, unassuming bar where people gather to drink and talk, some on their way up, some on their way down.

Supplementing her then-meager income culled from work as a photographer and artist, Sarah Stolfa tended bar at the venerable Philly institution for a few years, during which time she stumbled upon the brilliant idea of snapping pics of her daily customers. “The Regulars” (Artisan, 2009) is the result, and it’s simultaneously simple and stunning.

Call it the drinker’s version of Walker Evans and James Agee’s seminal “Let Us Now Praise Famous Men.” These pictures are each worth a thousand words.

Not news to us!: In case you missed it on TV, you can watch the recent segment CBS Sunday Morning did on the Canadian invasion of Tim Hortons doughnut shops into the U.S. market here:

The nine-minute piece, reported by correspondent Jeff Glor, a Western New York native, celebrates Tim’s in all its sticky, sugary, caffeinated glory. Pass a cruller!
