Landscape series adds Teton, Zion parks
It’s summertime and the living is easy. People from around the country are on vacation, or planning to hit the vacation trail — and for many, the trail leads to our national parks.
The U. S. Postal Service is hitting this trail to two such parks — Zion National Park in Utah and Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. These stamps hailing the parks are part of the “Scenic American Landscape Series.”
The beautiful stamp showing the Grand Teton, features a photo of the park in northwestern Wyoming which was established in 1929 to protect part of the Teton range and lakes near its base. The park was expanded in 1950 to include much of the adjacent Jackson Hole valley.
Now encompassing nearly 310,000 acres, the park is characterized by the majesty of its rugged mountains that tower some 7,000 feet over glacier lakes and the valley.
Renowned for its climbing and hiking trails, Grand Teton receives most of its 2.5 million recreational visitors a year in the warm summer months. There are opportunities to see moose, elk, bison and bears plus hundreds of species of birds.
The new stamp illustrates a photo of the park with the wording Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming.
The stamp (shown here) dedicated to Zion National Park portrays a picture of a sandstone formation on the east side of the park. The park was established in 1909 as Mukuntuweap National Monument. It was expanded and became a national park in 1919.
Now encompassing more than 229 square miles, Zion National Park has high plateaus, mesas with deep sandstone canyons, carved into towering cliffs. Many visitors seek its deserts, canyons, hanging gardens and plateaus. More than 120 miles of hiking trails are available to the approximately 2.5 million people who visit the park yearly. The text on the stamp reads “Zion National Park, Utah.” These stamps are now available at your local post office. First day may be obtained by calling 1-800-STAMP-24.
