Keep out the cold

Story tools:

Flannel sheets may be warm and cozy, but down comforters, polar fleece bedding and even winter-ready draperies can beat the chill as well.

Here are just a few products on the market:

• Insulated window treatments. These are designed to reduce energy costs by adding a layer of insulation. Among the options: thermal cotton-duck drapery panels and valances — backed in foam — from Linden Street for JCPenney Home Collection. Prices for the panel draperies begin at $35 for a 40-by- 45-inch panel (that’s the regular price; current price is $19.99). Visit jcp.com/energysolutions for more information and ideas.

• “Smart” blanket: Hammacher Schlemmer offers a “Temperature Regulating Thermocule Blanket” that uses patented technology developed for NASA. The wool/acrylic blanket has Thermocules in the fabric “that absorb, store and release heat to prevent chills or overheating which can result in restlessness.” It uses Smart Fabric Technology by Outlast.

According to hammacherschlemmer.com: “The fabric is ideal for couples and their varying body temperatures as it will adjust to each sleeper’s individual micro-climate.” Sounds serious. Full size: $109.95.

• Heating blankets: Lands’ End’s HeatComfort blanket ($179.50 for a queen) is one option. It is energy-efficient because it uses the lowest amount of direct current voltage without sacrificing warmth, the company says. There’s a HeatComfort throw, too, for $99.50.
