Vest-ed interest

Some are calling it an updated Annie Hall look, but a popular pairing for women this fall is the vest worn with wide-leg pants.

“This little combo continues to thrive this fall because the silhouette is so flattering. Who doesn’t want something that nips you in at the waist and makes your legs appear longer?” writes Debra D. Bass, in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Makeup tip

Looking ahead to fall, here’s a tip from makeup artist Sue Devitt:

“If you’re wearing a turtleneck or a blazer in a deeper color like black, gray or forest green, red lipstick sets it off beautifully,” she says in

the new book “Sephora:

The Ultimate Guide to Makeup, Skin and Hair from the Beauty Authority,” by Melissa Schweiger (Collins, $27.95).

Fashion speak

Fashion has its own language, but if you want to stay in the loop this fall, here are some terms you should know, defined by the Associated Press:

• A-line: A skirt that is narrowest at the waist and then flares out along a straight line

to the hem — like a triangle or an A.

• Dolman sleeve: A sleeve that’s wide at the armhole and narrows as it moves toward the wrist. It often creates the effect of a dropped shoulder.

• Ombre: The effect is created by dip dyeing fabric with various gradations. The color will appear lighter in some spots and darker in others. It can be done with more than one color, but shading a single color is more common.

• Sheath: Dress silhouette that’s long and lean with a nipped waist — and usually without a waistband — to create an hourglass shape. Its fashion opposite is the boxier, shorter shift dress that hangs from the shoulders and has a loose waist.
