Sew Simple / By Eunice Farmer

The ‘dress look’ is No. 1 in fashion these days

Story tools:

Dear Eunice Farmer: Whatever happened to blouse patterns? I can hardly find one in any of the pattern books. Hope you have an answer for this! Helen H.

Dear Helen: Fashion changes are happening in ready-to-wear, just as they have in patterns. The newest trend is the “top” instead of the tuck-in blouses of the past. These tops are worn over skirts or pants for a much different look — I think you will like it!

For a slim look, you might choose the same fabric as the skirt or pants instead of a contrast, as we did with the old blouses. This will give you more of a “dress look,” which is the No. 1 fashion now. I have chosen Vogue 8322 because it can be tailored or dressy, depending on your choice of fabric. The pattern features several different necklines and sleeves.

P. S.: In most cases, the new “tops” cannot be worn under most jackets, as we did in the past. They are often too long, and the sleeves are also longer. When you select patterns, be sure to think about the type of jacket you will be wearing; they are definitely as versatile as the previous tuck-in blouses we are used to wearing.

Why not try one? You will be up to date with the latest trend.

Dear Eunice Farmer: I am a “fabricholic” if ever there was one. I am always looking for something different, and I never have to run out at the last minute to find the right fabric. Recently, I fell in love with a beautiful wool. However, I love the wrong side better than the right. Is it possible to use the wrong side? Shirley K.

Dear Shirley: Yes, it is possible. I have done it myself. However, you must examine the fabric closely — often there are threads that have been tied together on the wrong side. Normally, they wouldn’t show, but if you use the wrong side, it must be perfectly woven, just as the right side. By using the wrong side, you will get a completely different look. It’s also possible to use both sides, using one for the garment and the other for trims, bindings, etc.

Tip of the week

Each week, a reader wins a prize for sending in a helpful sewing hint. This week’s winner is Rose Lindley, of Hudson, Ill. She will receive a collection of 100 hand-sewing needles from England. From the finest of fabrics to the heaviest, you will have the right needle at hand! Her tip: “If the pull on your zipper has broken, replace it with a paper clip. The colored clips will match most fabrics — it works great!”
