Design Notes: Beautiful vases without flowers
New life for old vases: Everyone has old flower vases around the house – especially those glass-cylinder ones favored by many florists. Why not dust them off and create a fun centerpiece?
This time of year, you can place a leafy branch in one. Or, for fun, fill it with candy corn.
Here are two other ideas –these from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:
• Fall-inspired: Fill the vase with acorns. Insert gold, red and orange
Sorghum (grassy) sprays. (As pictured.)
• Colorful and fun, especially for children: Get your hands on a package of multicolored tissue paper. Wad up a sheet of tissue paper loosely and place in the bottom of the vase. Repeat this step two more times.
Take a sheet of tissue paper and grab from the middle and place into the vase. Repeat this step four to six more times. (You can find out more about it, and see a photo, on my blog.)
New life for picture frames
In addition to vases, many of us have an array of unused picture frames around the house.
Consider these ideas for using them in new ways, from the Washington Post:
• Swap the glass in any frame with a mirror. Use alone or group different sizes and shapes on a wall or in a hallway.
• Use a large frame (with glass or mirror) as a tray for an ottoman.
• Attach decorative handles to the sides of a frame to create an accent piece on a table or an organizer for a dresser or nightstand.
• Let the frame be the artwork: Take out the glass and backing and hang a grouping on a wall, allowing the painted or papered wall to show through.
• Place a grouping over a bed in place of a headboard.
And finally…
