Design Notes: Safari decor, window boxes, Parkside tour

Updated: 05/09/08 12:24 PM

The Rono bamboo five-drawer chest is from Pier 1.

Safari chic at home The safari look and other globally inspired designs go far beyond fashion this spring. You’ll see it in home decor as well.

Among the pieces that will make you feel as if you have visited exotic places: Zebra-print rugs; bamboo chests of drawers; woven chairs and ottomans; handwoven rope headboards; trunks that look well-traveled, and more.

Planting tip

Window boxes that do not receive any direct sunlight can still be eye-catching. Container Gardening magazine shows one planted with a fern in the middle, coleus on each side and ivy dangling from beneath. Very beautiful.

Trim the coleus periodically to make it bushy and keep it from overwhelming the fern.

Tour time

The Parkside Community Association will present its 10th annual Parkside Tour of Homes from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. May 18. Nine homes will be open to visitors, including the Gardener’s Cottage and the Barton House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
