Tired of turkey leftovers? Got the stamina to survive until New Year’s? No time for a One Tank Trip, you say?

Bah, humbug! Here’s a Christmas tree outing we’ve turned into a day out with some holiday shopping—complete with navigation.

For this trip, we stuck close to home and used maps from the WNY Southtowns Scenic Byway organization (

www.wnyssb.org

). Several entities (including UB) worked to bring the Byway under one designation for cultural, historical, parks/recreation and tourism purposes. Officially approved in 2007, the drive includes Southtown Routes 219, 240, 20A, 39, 16 (Olean Road), starting roughly in Orchard Park and East Aurora, then heading south through Boston, Colden, Concord, West Falls and Springville. Route markers are in the works, but for our purposes, we used the great maps from the Web site and drove along (and sometimes off) the path to enjoy lovely scenery and fantastic holiday shopping.

(Since a country drive is what we were after, we didn’t spend time in Orchard Park and East Aurora, as we know all about their wonderful shops. We also took two days, so you might want to pick one route and see how far you get. Also, some of these places close early on Sunday, so call ahead or go online for times.)

Here’s what we came across (and loved):

Beyond East Aurora (Routes 20A & 16): Heading east out of East Aurora on 20A, we hung a left at Two Rod Road to Bullis Road and the Marilla Country Store (

www.marillacountrystore.com

; 655-1031). Open seven days a week, the outside doesn’t look like much, but inside it is the jackpot of gift stores. Jam-packed from top to bottom, we found everything from bulk candy and toys to exquisite jewelry and home decor. Christmas is in full swing here. The classic nutcrackers, along with Wizard of Oz, a golfer and fireman versions, would make fabulous gifts. Coming back on 20A to Route 16 going south, we stopped at the Schoolhouse Gallery and Shop (1054 Olean Road; 655-4080). The fine furniture is stunning, as are the cutting boards and wine bottle holders. If the workshop is open, take a peek inside. Continuing on Route 16 we reached Holland and Roth’s Hillside Tree Farm&Gift Shop (

www.rothshillside.com

; 537-9398). They sell Christmas trees, of course, and have a nice little gift shop. Starving, we drove a little further on Route 16 and found Zider Zee, a great diner with a giant windmill front. Nothing costs over 7 bucks. It opens at the crack of dawn and closes at 2 p. m. Nearby, you’ll see Robinson’s Gardens (367 S. Main, Holland), a quirky gift shop that carries live petite poinsettias for the holidays.

What we missed: Aurora Rails&Hobbies, 2268 Blakeley Road, 652-5718;

www.aurorarails.com

. Springville, Concord, Collins Center along Route 39: From Route 16 south out of Holland, you’ll come to Route 39 in Yorkshire. Hang a right. If you have time, stop to marvel at the “Estate Sale”—a giant red barn with tons of items. Mind boggling, yet we did unearth two cooking knives for $2.

Continue along Route 39 (Main Street) into Springville. Here we fell in love with (and scored a chic $15 pewter jacket at)My Best Friend’s Closet (

www.mybestfriendsclosetonline.com

; 592-7283), a secondhand clothing store. Across the street is the Springville Hardware Store/Home Wear shop (

www.hardwareandhomewear.com

; 592-7012). There are also a couple of antique shops on Main Street to check out. Head out of Springville on Route 39 toward Collins Center. If you turn right at Mortons Corners and then left on Woodside Road, follow the signs to Rhapsody’s Unique Clothing& Gifts (

www.rhapsodysgifts.com

; 592-5015). Not only did we find funky gift items, but shoes, jewelry and, to our surprise, Lucky Brand jeans and clothing. Get back on Route 39, still heading toward Collins Center, to hit second jackpot—Baker’s Polish Pottery (3595 Route 39;

www.bakerspolishpottery.com

; 481-6077). Housed in an old blacksmith’s shop, the interior is filled with the signature blue pottery (in five different patterns) from Boleslawiec, Poland. You’ll find gifts galore here. If time allows, just a bit more down the road is the Humming Herd Alpaca shop (

www.hummingherdalpacas.com

). What we missed: Concord Amish Village (

www.concordamish.com

; 592-9158) along Route 39 between Springville and Collins Center. For other Route 39 places, visit

www.threeninecollective.com

. Beyond Orchard Park (Routes 277 to 240 West Falls, Colden, East Concord): Another scenic way to get to (or back from) Springville is to follow Route 240 (the Kissing Bridge ski route), where we found the third gem of our trip, the Colden Country Store (corner of Heath Road; 941-5016). This charming shop is filled with beautiful home decor items, gifts and lovely tabletop pieces. The napkins and runners are gorgeous.

In East Concord, you’ll come upon the darling Homespun Treasures (11952 Route 240; 592-3480) and nearby Second Hand Antiques (11974 Route 240; 592-0938). Today is the last day of Homespun Treasures’ holiday open house (11 a. m. to 5 p. m.). Owner Sue Lux converts her own home to a Christmas shop for the event.

Also along this route are two WNY food favorites—Butterwood Desserts in West Falls (

www.butterwooddesserts.com

; 652-0131), where you can order holiday desserts or grab a bite to eat, and Wendel’s Poultry in East Concord (

www.wendelspoultry.com

; 592-2299, closed Sundays and Mondays). At Wendel’s, you can pick up their barbecue or chicken wing sauce and maple syrup products. Bring a cooler and you can tote home some fresh grain-fed chicken, Rock Cornish hens or frozen items like homemade chicken or turkey potpies. What we missed: The ski shops along Route 240 and the intriguing Mud Cafe in West Falls (1928 Route 240;

www.mud-usa.com

; 652-2848). It carries biking products and gear. More to see

We saw many beautiful town churches and barns and lots of “eggs for sale” signs where you could buy fresh eggs for your holiday baking.

Unfortunately, we didn’t have time for the Springville Center for the Arts (

www.springvillearts.org

; 592-9038) or the Concord Historical Society Warner Museum (

www.townofconcordnyhistoricalsociety.org

; 592-0094), which salutes football great Glenn Scobey “Pop” Warner and other famous East Concord residents.

While out, you can find a tree at these farms, and others (visit

www.christmastreemap.com

). Forevergreens, 11390 Bolton Road, Springville (

www.forevergreens.net

; 560-8004). Jake’s Greenhouse&Christmas Trees, 11904 Route 240, East Concord (592-2199 or 961-8837).

Country Pine Farms, 11996 Humphries Road, Holland (

www.countrypinefarm.com

; 537-2927) Evergreen Hills Christmas Tree Farm, 7586 Vermont Hill Road, Holland (

www.evergreenhills.org

; 537-2750). Hills Christmas Tree Farm, 13214 Belscher Road, Springville (592-5096).

Roth’s Hillside Trees, 182 N. Main (Route 16), Holland (

www.rothshillside.com

; 537-9398). Places to eat

Old Orchard Inn, 2095 Blakeley Corners Road, East Aurora (

www.oldorchardny.com

; 652-4664). Fireside Inn, Route 240, East Concord (

www.firesideinnwny.com

; 592-9979). Colden Country Inn, 8815 Route 240, Colden (

www.coldeninn.com
