Dick and Jenny’s serves some intriguing Creole-influenced dinners in the revamped building that housed Del and Herb’s for years. They range from classic po-boy sandwiches ($7.50 to $9.50) to a 16-ounce prime rib or pan-seared sea scallops and shrimp with a crispy crab cake and jasmine coconut rice for $22.

But we knew that the place had cheaper prices for breakfast and lunch, so John and I met Ruth and Dan there on a Saturday morning. You seat yourself and order at the counter for breakfast and lunch. Chalkboards list the egg dishes, pancakes, hash, soup, salads and hot and cold sandwiches. The po-boys are there, with other delicious-sounding sandwiches. But we all settled on breakfast.

The Rajun’ Cajun’ ($6) is a homemade flat bread topped with hot Italian sausage, fried egg, sauteed onions and peppers and jack cheese. On the plate, it resembled a breakfast pizza. All the ingredients were excellent, and its spiciness was assertive without being overwhelming.

The baked French toast ($5.50) resembled a block of homemade Thanksgiving stuffing, because it was made with torn bread rather than slices. It was sweet and delicious.

Two of us ordered egg bakes ($6). The East River egg bake was made with spinach, mushrooms, tomatoes and provolone; sausage, bacon, ham and aged cheddar were mixed into the Oakfield. The East River was cool in the center, while a knife was needed to cut the hard top of the East River. New potatoes served on the side were wan rather than crispy. Each egg bake comes with a muffin, scone or half a bagel. All the baked goods were great.

An orange and pineapple slice and a few grapes prettily decorated each plate.

A cup of creamy tomato-basil soup ($3) was fabulous, with basil pesto swirled on top.

Dick & Jenny’s is open from 8 a. m. to 2 p. m. and 5 to 10 p. m. Tuesday through Saturday, closed Sunday and Monday. There are three steps inside the door.
