Connor’s is a comfortable local restaurant, with plenty of people dining or enjoying a drink at the bar on the weeknight John and I stopped in with John and Pat. The rooms had a homey feel, with warm wood accents here and there.

We started with a cup of minestrone ($2.99, $3.99 for a bowl). The tomato-based broth held a full complement of simmered vegetables and an abundance of beans. A pre-dinner salad was a notch above the usual, with green peppers, tomatoes and black and green olives accenting the iceberg. A basket of warm assorted rolls, including one generously crusted with poppyseeds, was served with these starters.

The chicken a la king (from the specials menu, $10.99) was served in a wide bowl over toast points. The creamy mixture, which featured plenty of chunks of chicken breast, peas and even some mushrooms and a few pimentoes, was steaming hot.

The burger-eater in the crowd laughed about ordering a Beli-Buster burger ($7.49) so he pronounced it “Be-LIE Buster.” Luckily, the server laughed, and he got the right thing. Cooked exactly as ordered, it was a sizable beef patty on a fresh roll. The burger, good as it was, got some competition for star of the plate by a huge pile of what they called cottage fries. These medium-thin horizontal slices of potato were probably deep-fried briefly, until the outsides were uniformly crisp and the insides warm and steaming. They were like the best steak fries you’ve ever had, but better. We have had potatoes this good in Ireland, where they know their spuds, but never on this continent. Don’t miss them!

The stuffed cabbage dinner ($9.99) offered two fist-sized stuffed cabbages, filled with a ground beef and rice mixture and doused with the classic tomato sauce, along with a pile of the heavenly cottage fries. Green beans in a dish looked as though they had been canned at some point, but they were totally unnecessary.

A club sandwich ($8.99) has many ingredients that must mesh to succeed, and this one did. From crisp bacon to real sliced turkey and fresh toasted bread, it was first-rate.

Connor’s kitchen is open from 11 a. m. to 10 p. m. Monday through Thursday, from 11 a. m. to 11 p. m. Friday and Saturday and from 1 to 8 p. m. Sunday. It is handicapped-accessible.
