Farmers markets in Western New York: The 2009 Guide
Updated: August 21, 2010, 8:11 AM
After cutting meat for 44 years, Dave Cloy hopes the scales are finally tipping ever so slightly in his direction.
For decades, facilities to process locally grown beef cattle and pigs have been disappearing, as consumers bought more of their meat at supermarkets. But as 2009 warms up, business is picking up, said Cloy, who turns locally raised cows into steaks and burger at his Ransomville slaughterhouse.
"People are really beginning to wonder what they're eating, Cloy said. He's more than happy to tell them he knows exactly. He can tell you where his animals grew up, and how they were turned into cuts of beef that were frozen immediately.
"To me, that's much better than cutting a steak and putting it on a tray the way they do in the supermarket," Cloy said. "Let all the juice run out of it. How can that be good?"
Cloy's Ransomville store is just one of many places across Western New York where shoppers
can go for local food.
Community supported agriculture (CSA) farms, where subscribers pay at the start of the season for a weekly share of the farm's produce, have also benefited from shoppers looking to buy local. In 2005 there were three such farms; now Western New York has seven.
Thorpe's Organic Family Farm, in East Aurora, will have probably 350 families enrolled before its first weekly market bags go out in coming weeks.
Eggplant for eggplant, last year's organic, locally grown Community Supported Agriculture crop would have cost more than twice as much if bought at supermarkets — and that's at standard vegetable pricing, not organic, Thorpe added.
But at Thorpe, as at other CSAs, the aesthetics contribute greatly to its appeal.
"The customer knows it's fresh, it's organic, it doesn't come from California and get shipped to three different warehouses and repackaged before they get it," said Thorpe, whose farm encourages visitors. "They get to see the baby chicks, pet the calves, to be on the farm where their food is produced," she said. "They get to see the farmer's face."
So, today we present a Spring Market Guide, a list of the farmers markets, community supported agriculture farms and local meat producers across the state's eight westernmost counties.
Listings were provided by Cornell Cooperative Extension agents and supplemented with additional information. If your establishment is omitted, please contact agalarneau@buffnews.com for inclusion online now and for next year. A separate list of farm stands and you-pick fruit farms will be published later this spring.
