‘Glee’ soundtrack hits high notes
Updated: August 21, 2010, 3:11 AM
F ans of the Fox hit “Glee” were rewarded when “Glee: The Music, Volume 1” was released earlier this month. This fun soundtrack from the more-than-a- TV-show includes 17 memorable songs that have aired on past episodes with bonus tracks that are available exclusively at Target or on iTunes.
The album features the powerhouse vocals of Lea Michele (Rachel Berry) on songs such as Celine Dion’s “Taking Chances” and Rhianna’s “Take a Bow” as well as a diva duet with Broadway star Kristin Chenoweth.
Fans of the show will be glad to hear the signature group numbers, which are among the most popular iTunes downloads, such as Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” and Queen’s “Somebody to Love.” The cast performs strongly as a whole, giving a fresh take on both classic rock and Broadway show tunes.
While Michele receives top billing for performing a majority of the soundtrack, Matthew Morrison, who portrays the hopeful chorus teacher Will Schuester, gets major credit for belting out “Alone” by Heart, with Kristin Chenoweth as well as showing off impressive rap skills in covers of Kanye West’s “Gold Digger” and “Bust a Move,” both of which were memorable moments on the show.
Other highlights on the soundtrack include selections from the latest episode, “Wheels,” such as “Defying Gravity” sung by Chris Colfer (Kurt) and Lea Michele as well as the incredibly tuneful “Dancing with Myself” by Billy Idol performed by the lovable Kevin McHale (Artie). The character Finn, played by Corey Monteith is well-represented in REO Speedwagon’s “Can’t Fight This Feeling” along with Amber
Riley’s (Mercedes) cover of “Hate on Me” and Mark Salling’s (Puck) acoustic take on Neil Diamond’s hit, “Sweet Caroline.”
Some fans will be disappointed to hear that the famous mash-ups (“It’s My Life”/”Confessions Part II” and “Halo”/”Walking On Sunshine”) failed to make the album, but are likely to be on Volume 2 which comes out Dec. 2.
‘Glee’ airs at 8 p. m. Wednesdays on Fox.
