This time of year, most kids are kicking back, dressing for games, doing chores, packing for sleep-away camp or, hey, just sleeping.

Some are beginning to shop for back-to-school. It happens.

These days many know what they like even before they shop -- and some get an early start.

Zoe Dodd, 15, of Grand Island, already has picked out "a really cute sun dress" from Target to wear the first day of school.

"I might wear a cardigan with it, as long as it matches. It has to match," Zoe says.

She knows that skinny jeans are a big trend, but she prefers something with a bit more flare; two favorite styles are from American Eagle -- the Artist and Boyfriend.

Shirts might come from Aeropostale or Kohl's.

"I don't like things with too much pattern," Zoe says. One new favorite is a purple, green and white shirt with roll-up sleeves and a little bit of Western styling.

"It's kind of a plaid, but not exactly. It's easy to accessorize. I can wear it with a tank or cami, jean shorts or jeans," she says.

In the mood to shop -- or just start thinking about it? Here are some trends and fun looks we've spotted for the back-to-school crowd. (Tip: Know your school dress code before shopping!)

Graphic Ts. Rocker Ts, sports Ts, logo Ts and more are a key look -- in every size, every style, every price range. For young girls, it's all about sparkle and color. For boys and teens, the Shaun White collection at Target and/or target.com includes graphic Ts inspired by the lifestyle of the Olympic gold medalist and his brother Jesse. Think snowboarders, skaters, surfers.

Oftentimes, graphic Ts -- whatever the theme -- are layered under hoodies, cardigans or our next trend ...

Plaid shirts, tunics, woven tops. Some are bright. Some are muted. But these often are not your classic fall plaids. Look for unique color combinations as well as special effects such as bleaching.

Many have roll-up sleeves and can be worn buttoned or unbuttoned. Oh, and why not try belting it this fall?

Go with the flow. The look is long and loose for vests that -- get this! -- sometimes are attached right to the T-shirt. That means less to think about on school mornings.

For those who prefer to do their own layering, thank you, check out the Decree "flyaway vest" from J.C. Penney's juniors' department and the "Drapey Vest" in soft cotton at American Eagle.

More form-fitting vests can be found in the new Material Girl collection coming next month to select Macy's stores. The juniors' line, created by Madonna and daughter, Lourdes (nicknamed Lola), includes several vests. One is black and furry. The other, black and studded.

Also watch for flyaway cardigans, sometimes short-sleeved, another something to layer over a favorite T or tank.

Skinny jeans and jeggings. Denim comes in a mind-boggling array of styles, but the skinny look still reigns supreme for girls. And straight legs are popular for guys.

"These key silhouettes are available in a vast array of new washes and are the perfect foundation for building your back-to-school wardrobe," says LeAnn Nealz, design officer for American Eagle Outfitters, in a trends report.

Pair them up with styles from this season's key trends: stripes, military and pretty bohemian looks.

What's over for jeans? Baggy.

Rolled-cuff cuts are good choices for fall, and bleached denim shows up quite a bit in mini skirts.

Oh, and about those denim short-shorts girls, tweens and teens have been wearing all summer long? These are being shown layered over leggings for fall.

Striped sweaters: Cropped, long, cinched at the waist -- it's a girl's choice. Layer over a tank, cami or graphic T.

Military looks: It's all about a closer fit; cargo shorts, skirts, crops or pants; camouflage; a palette of green, khaki, brown and gray, and details such as decorative metal buttons and epaulettes.

For girls, Justice has a Camo collection which includes printed canvas sneakers and a tutu (more on that trend below). But that's just the beginning of what's out there for girls and guys.

Tutus. Think short, layered, tiered twirly-girl skirts. At Children's Place, the youngest girls can dress up in a tiered skirt of polyester mesh attached right to leggings. One is shown with a puppy graphic T-shirt and high-top sneakers. This look is described as "Ballerina Rocker."

At abercrombie kids, the look grows up with a navy tiered skirt paired with a red plaid shirt and navy tank. Material Girl includes several as well, which comes as no surprise.

Cool sneakers, footwear: Whether it's a pair of Keds, Vans, Converse or a host of other brands, shoes or sneakers can make the outfit.

In a photograph for the Shaun White collection for Target, for example, electric blue "Outlaw" skate shoes are shown with gray jeans, black T-shirt and a gray hoodie.

Cool.
