Food for thought if the president gets hungry
Updated: August 21, 2010, 6:12 AM
As organizers obsessed over details in anticipation of President Obama’s visit today, even the presidential motorcade’s route was secret.
But the biggest mystery, for many Buffalonians, was a question that engages local pride like few other things: Where is Obama having lunch?
The chief executive has been making time to eat like a local at other stops along his “White House to Main Street” tour. He’s diving into hometown favorites in most places, like fried chicken and other Southern specialties at Mrs. Wilkes’ Dining Room in Savannah, Ga., and cheeseburgers and fries at Peggy Sue’s Cafe in Monroe City, Mo.
So where will the motorcade take the First Eater after landing at the airport around lunchtime? Here’s a rundown of the places attracting most of the speculation, and the arguments for and against. It’s completely free of actual reporting, for two reasons: If Obama were coming, the restaurant couldn’t tell us. Also, pesky facts cramp our speculation muscles.
Since nobody’s in a bigger hurry than the president, you’d have to consider Charlie the Butcher (1065 Wehrle Drive, Amherst) a candidate. It serves an estimable beef on weck, classic Buffalo comfort food.
Pro: It’s only five minutes from the airport –even less if you’re barreling down the road in a convoy of black limos with F-18A Hornet air cover.
Con: Small dining room could force Obama to eat in the limo.
If the president’s route takes him through Amherst, Duff’s Sheridan Patio (3651 Sheridan Drive, Amherst), has to be a contender.
Pro: It’s a celery stick’s throw from the Youngmann Highway. Chicken wings are the Buffalo signature dish, and the chief executive has shown he’s not afraid of artery-challenging lunches. Duff’s rivals wing inventor Anchor Bar in the hearts of Western New Yorkers.
Con: Dim interior lighting could make it difficult for the obligatory photo ops.
You can’t ignore the Anchor Bar (1047 Main St.), though.
The wing temple at Main and North streets draws all the celebrities with a hankering for crispy chicken digits.
Pro: It’s not just the wings, it’s the history. This is where Teresa Bellissimo started the revolution.
Con: It’s such an obvious choice his Secret Service detail won’t let him near it.
If Obama has a craving for soul food, the smothered pork chops at Gigi’s (257 E. Ferry St.) will give him the strength to go on.
Pro: The president can see for himself that Buffalo can compete nationally, at least when it comes to peach cobbler.
Con: His proximity to sweet potato pie of this caliber could require Executive Nap Time later on Air Force One.
Just down the road from the Depot Street manufacturer he’s visiting, there’s a sign for a place that might seem tempting: Nookies Hot Wings (900 William St).
Pro: Can’t get more convenient that that, only yards away from his other stop.
Con: May in fact be closed. Just as well; it sounds more like a Bill Clinton place anyway.
