Jenna Fishback and Lucas Tasker have a love story that is almost meant for the big screen. They met in their East Aurora kindergarten classroom. They even have documentation of what could be called their first date – a photo of the two of them in Fishback’s pool following their elementary school’s field day.
“His mom came up to my mom at the field day and said, ‘My Luke is a little more than smitten with your Jenna,’ ” Fishback said. That’s the line both families remember and still recite when sharing the story.
The two officially started dating in their junior year of high school. She attended Nardin Academy, and he – the son of Bills’ great Steve Tasker – played football at St. Francis High School. They both went to college in Ithaca, she for vocal performance and music education at Ithaca College. He played football for Cornell University, graduating with a degree in communications.
Fishback insists that they did not make their college decisions based on where one another was going. It just worked out that way. She’s glad it did.
While both were still in Ithaca, they became engaged on April 27, 2013, among family, including both sets of parents: Steve and Sarah Tasker and Donald and Denise Fishback, both of East Aurora.
Fishback tells the story with great detail. It was NFL draft day, and everyone from both families was in town to be with Tasker, a free agent, while he waited for the call. She had a chorus concert that night and had to leave before he heard any news.
“After I left, he got a call from the San Diego Chargers. I rushed back. I was so sad I had missed it, but he said not to worry because the best part of the night was yet to come,” Fishback recalled.
When the time came to give Tasker a champagne toast, the families formed a circle. Right before the toast, Tasker took Fishback’s flute and placed it down, taking her into the center of the circle. It was there he got down on one knee and proposed.
The couple were married at 2 p.m. May 17 in First Presbyterian Church in East Aurora.
Guests gathered for a reception in the Golden Ballroom at Statler City, Buffalo. The Rev. Langdon Hubbard, of First Presbyterian Church, heard the couple’s vows.
At the end of the night, the newlyweds performed the famous dance from the 1980s hit “Dirty Dancing.” They had been taking lessons and practicing for a month in preparation.
After a trip to Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands, the couple will make their home in Hamilton, Ont., where Fishback is a music teacher. Tasker plays for the Canadian Football League’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
