Blue Bull Tavern opened in January, a few football fields away from student apartment complexes near the University at Buffalo’s Amherst Campus. But it’s not depending on students to fill its bar stools.

Located at University Place (1300 Sweet Home Road, 688-3544), it’s in the same plaza as a Mighty Taco, Dunkin’ Donuts and a new Staybridge Suites hotel. The Villas at Rensch student apartments are neighbors.

Its target clientele isn’t undergraduates – it’s their parents.

“We’re not really aiming for the undergraduate crowd. It’s not really geared up as a kids’ bar,” said Carm Paolini. A partner at Lebro’s for 30 years, Paolini opened the tavern with veteran Buffalo restaurateur Steve Calvaneso.

“I’d be happy if they came in and had a couple beers and some wings. But we’re looking more at an upscale tavern. We’re not doing two-for-one Labatt’s and 10-cent wings.” The Blue Bull is targeting clientele from businesses on Sweet Home and Corporate Parkway, the football and basketball crowds from UB, and hotel customers, Paolini said.

The menu includes steak sandwiches, flatbread pizzas, fried calamari, pulled pork, fish sandwiches, “things like that,” said Paolini.

Get your reservations now: Spring Local Restaurant Week starts March 31.

Through April 6, hundreds of locally owned restaurants in Western New York offer $20.14 meals to give new customers a reason to come in, and to reward regulars.

Depending on the level of service and cuisine, that $20.14 can get you dinner for two, or one entree and a glass of wine.

Mazurek’s, the South Park Avenue bakery, has opened the first place you can buy bread downtown in recent memory.

Known for its rye, Mazurek’s started selling that bread, plus pastries, cookies and more, out of a counter at the Market Arcade building, 617 Main St. The phone number is 768-2157.

“We’re doing all of our baking at the South Park location,” said owner Ty Reynolds. “We’re only going to have 423 square feet at the Market Arcade building. So each morning I take the baked goods down there.”

Hours are 7:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., but that could change, so you might want to call first.
