Wearing white may be a bit risky for mothers of preschoolers. Or travel-mug toting commuting women. Or those not willing to switch from Pinot Noir to Pinot Gris.
Still, there’s a place for it in many women’s wardrobes – especially with the warm weather finally here.
“People are wearing white all year now, but nothing says summer like white,” said Pat Seitz, buyer for Danahy’s, a women’s specialty store at 3099 Sheridan Drive, Amherst, in the Northtown Plaza.
White looks and feels cool on hot days. It looks great with silver or gold accessories. And can you imagine a better backdrop for turquoise jewelry?
This season white T-shirts, tanks and tunics are fashioned in a variety of fabrics and styles, sometimes with accents such as front and back seams, lace inserts or a keyhole detail on the back.
White dresses come short, long, tea-length or with high-low or handkerchief-style hemlines. In addition to solid white cottons and linens, white eyelet lace is popular for dresses, shirts and other separates. It even can be seen on a pair of Keds Champion sneakers.
Other white fabrics are covered with Swiss dots – some also with lace accents.
Retailers including Macy’s display white dresses all in one place. A few of the styles you’ll find in stores: white shift dresses, sundresses, strapless dresses and white dresses with ruffled bodices. Sometimes, a brown belt adds the finishing touch.
We’re also seeing some white pants with wider-cut legs and a lot of white denim. White denim jean jackets from the Gap. Levi’s white denim “Trucker” vests in the juniors’ department. White denim jeans in a variety of cuts, as well as white denim shorts.
Of course white also has its close cousins – ivory, bone and cream among them.
