Fall prevention plans discussed at meeting

Community engagement meetings for a pilot program designed to prevent falls will be offered in the city during the next several weeks.

The program will target older adults. People and groups interested in planning and implementing the spring Fillmore District Falls Prevention Program are invited to attend one of the following informational meetings, which all run from 10:30 a.m. to noon:

• Tuesday in the Broadway Market Senior Center, 999 Broadway.

• Dec. 10 in Pine Harbor Apartments, 10 Seventh St., second floor Community Room.

• Dec. 17 in the Valley Community Center, 93 Leddy St.

Childhood nutrition expert gets UB post

Nutritional epidemiologist Youfa Wang, an internationally recognized expert in childhood nutrition and obesity, has been named professor and chairman of the University at Buffalo Department of Social and Preventive Medicine in the School of Public Health and Health Professions.

Wang comes to UB from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where he founded and directed the Johns Hopkins Global Center on Childhood Obesity. He also served as an associate professor in the departments of International Health, Epidemiology, and Health, Behavior & Society, with adjunct appointments in the School of Medicine.

His research focuses on child nutrition and growth, and has advanced understanding of the global childhood obesity and the influences of dietary intake on chronic disease risks. He has published extensively on these issues, as well as global health disparities.

During the past 12 years, his research has received more than $23 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health and several of his studies are ongoing. In addition to his American university appointments, he has been an adjunct professor at three major Chinese research institutes.
