CONTEST

The National Family Partnership has announced its 28th annual Red Ribbon Week (Oct. 23-31) contest. Students, along with their parents, are encouraged to decorate their front door, mailbox or fence with a red ribbon and this year’s theme “A Healthy Me is Drug Free.” Then take a photo with your family to show the decoration and upload it to redribbon.org/contest by Nov. 4. Ask family and friends to vote for your entry at redribbon.org/contest from Nov. 5-19. Winners will be announced at redribbon.org Dec. 6. Ten families nationwide will win $1,000 for their school and an iPad for their home.

EARTH SCIENCE DAY

The 16th annual Western New York Earth Science Day celebration, co-sponsored by the Penn Dixie Paleontological and Outdoor Education Center and the Buffalo Association of Professional Geologists, will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Penn Dixie site in Hamburg. Activities will include drilling and rock coring demonstrations at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.; rocket launches; fossil collecting; games; crafts; and more. The event is free, except for fossil collection, which is $7 for adults and $6 for children.

Also at Penn Dixie on Saturday, an astronomy program will be held at 6:30 p.m. to view Saturn, Mercury and constellations. Telescopes will be available. Cost is $3, free for children 2 and under.

BUG WORKS

The Buffalo Museum of Science, 1020 Humboldt Parkway, will open its new science studio, Bug Works, an interactive gallery about insects and their anthropod relatives, on Monday. Special family-friendly activities will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, visit www.sciencebuff.org.
