Vinny Di Re Jr. eats often, but several of his six meals a day are small. In fact, half are protein shakes.

“If you starve your body, your body is going to hold onto everything and it’s going to turn into fat. People who eat once a day, that’s the worst thing you can do,” said Di Re, 43, of Williamsville, owner of the All Juiced Up! shops in the LA Fitness locations in Buffalo, Clarence and Niagara Falls. He soon will open his fourth in a new gym the chain will open at Niagara Falls Boulevard and Sheridan Drive in Amherst.

The juice bars are open to the public; you don’t have to be a gym member to enjoy 20 ounces of PB Cup Lite, Green Giant, Energize Me or 37 other varieties. Di Re downs his first “snack” of the day about 9:30 a.m. – the Body Builder – made with milk, a banana and 40 grams of bio-whey protein.

So you eat often to keep your metabolism burning?

My body is like a furnace. I’m constantly feeding fuel into it. But you’ve also got to put the time in at the gym. Right now, I’m working out six days a week, 2 to 2½ hours a day, one body part a day. Monday is chest, Tuesday is arms, Wednesday is legs, Thursday’s shoulders, Friday is back and Saturday is arms again. I take off Sunday. In between, I’ll do three days of cardio: 40 minutes on the cross trainer or the elliptical.
