Air conditioner attack
A man attacked director Michael Bay with an air conditioner on the Hong Kong set of “Transformers: The Age of Extinction” on Thursday.
A statement the studio released described “a bizarre encounter with a man allegedly under the influence of a narcotic substance.”
“The man, who had earlier accosted several other crew members, rushed onto the set in Quarry Bay and swung the air conditioning unit directly at Bay’s head,” the statement said. “The director ducked and wrested the air conditioner from his attacker, preventing what could have been a serious accident. The company’s security team quickly stepped in and subdued the assault.”
The police arrested the man and two of his companions, and the production immediately resumed filming without further incident, according to Paramount.
Bay, 48, and his the cast and crew had just moved the production to Hong Kong this week after 4½ months of filming in Arizona, Utah, Texas, Michigan, Illinois and Washington.
Comedian sues for benefits
The comedian Louis CK’s production company sued to block a claim for $28,000 in health and benefit contributions tied to his work as editor of his FX Networks LLC series “Louie.”
Louis CK, whose real name is Louis Szekely, is the creator and star of the series, which is in production for a fourth season for FX, a unit of Twenty-First Century Fox.
Szekely’s production company, Pig Newton Inc., sued the directors of three union benefit plans in Manhattan federal court Wednesday, seeking a court declaration that it doesn’t owe the money. Pig Newton claimed the contribution was calculated using an “invalid rule” that ignores the hours Szekely actually spent working on the show.
Flynt opposes death penalty
Porn publisher Larry Flynt says he doesn’t want to see the man whose gunshots paralyzed him 25 years ago put to death for his crimes.
In an essay published Thursday in the Hollywood Reporter, Flynt says that while he would love to take pliers and a pair of wire cutters to Joseph Paul Franklin, he does not believe in the death penalty.
The Hustler magazine publisher says keeping Franklin locked in a tiny prison cell for the rest of his life is a greater punishment.
Franklin has been in prison since 1980 for a string of shootings that left five people dead and others wounded.
He is scheduled to be executed Nov. 20 in Missouri.
