Emmys to feature tributes
The Emmy Awards will feature five special memorial tributes, including one to “Glee” star Cory Monteith, organizers said.
Monteith died in July at age 31 of a heroin and alcohol overdose. He will be remembered by the show’s Jane Lynch.
In addition, Edie Falco will honor James Gandolfini, her co-star on “The Sopranos.” Gandolfini died of a heart attack in June at age 51.
Other tributes during the Sunday event will see Rob Reiner honoring “All in the Family Star” Jean Stapleton; Robin Williams remembering his friend and mentor Jonathan Winters; and Michael J. Fox honoring “Family Ties” producer Gary David Goldberg.
The ceremony on CBS also will include the traditional “in memoriam” segment recognizing other industry members who have died.
SNL adds 6 cast members
NBC says “Saturday Night Live” has added six featured players to its roster.
Beck Bennett, John Milhiser, Kyle Mooney, Mike O’Brien, Noel Wells and Brooks Wheelan will join the troupe as “SNL” enters its 39th season on Sept. 28.
Meanwhile, “SNL” executive producer Lorne Michaels says longtime “Weekend Update” anchor Seth Meyers will be joined at the “Update” desk by Cecily Strong.
Michaels says the plan has Strong initially sharing the “Update” desk with Meyers, then going solo when he begins hosting “Late Night” in February.
Michaels’ remarks were first reported in the New York Times.
Kennedy book being reissued
One of the most controversial books about John F. Kennedy, William Manchester’s “The Death of a President,” is being reissued as an e-book and paperback.
Little, Brown and Company announced Monday that “Death of a President” will be available Oct. 8. It’s currently out of print.
Manchester’s book had been authorized by the Kennedy family soon after JFK’s murder but was delayed after Jacqueline Kennedy threatened legal action to stop publication. She objected to plans to serialize the book and reportedly was concerned about passages that criticized then-President Lyndon Johnson, who had a tense relationship with the Kennedys.
Some material was removed. The book was published in 1967 and became a best-seller.
Numerous books are coming out this fall to mark the 50th anniversary of Kennedy’s assassination.
Cyrus’ engagement off
A wrecking ball has hit Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth’s relationship.
Representatives for both celebrities confirmed Monday that the couple have called off their engagement.
Hemsworth, 23, proposed to Cyrus, 20, last year.
Cyrus, whose hits include “We Can’t Stop” and “Wrecking Ball,” will release a new album called “Bangerz” on Oct. 8. Hemsworth was one of the stars of “The Hunger Games.” Their breakup was first reported by People magazine.
