Aretha’s ‘miraculous’ recovery
Aretha Franklin won’t say what caused her latest health problems but says she’s had a “miraculous” recovery and is looking forward to performing soon.
“My treatments are going very well. My last CAT scan, my doctor at the CAT scan and everyone who sees this says that this is miraculous, absolutely miraculous,” Franklin said Tuesday.
“I was talking to Smokey Robinson, my oldest best friend Smokey, talking about the fact that some doctors are not very well acquainted with faith healing. And Smokey said, ‘Well, they just don’t know who your healer is.’ ”
The 71-year-old Queen of Soul has canceled several concerts and public appearances over the last few months due to unspecified health concerns.
‘Today’ starting book club
NBC’s “Today” show is investing in readers.
The morning program announced Tuesday that it is starting a new book club. Its first club pick is “The Bone Season,” the debut novel of 21-year-old Samantha Shannon. Published by Bloomsbury, it’s the first in a planned seven-part series set in a dystopian futuristic London.
The “Today” show had a book club about 10 years ago. It lasted about three years.
This time, the show has combined forces with Google+ Hangout to open up a discussion about the books among “Today” personalities, authors and fans.
New selections will be made every four to five weeks. The chosen reads will have stickers on their covers like Oprah’s Book Club, which was featured on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” Winfrey has revived her club on the OWN network, now called Oprah’s Book Club 2.0.
Lopez due back on ‘Idol’
A person familiar with negotiations to bring Jennifer Lopez back as an “American Idol” judge says her return will be announced this week.
The person said Monday that a deal is close to being signed with Lopez, who was an “Idol” judge for the 2011 and 2012 seasons. The person wasn’t authorized to comment publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.
The person says Lopez decided to rejoin the show because its production schedule will allow her to spend more time with her children, 5-year-old twins Emme and Max.
Cowell welcomes fatherhood
British TV mogul Simon Cowell says he’s looking forward to being a father, his first public confirmation that he will be having a child with married New York socialite Lauren Silverman.
Cowell, who had previously dodged questions about the affair, told the BBC that “things are changing in my life right now, for the better,” adding: “I’m proud to be a dad.”
The talent show curmudgeon, 53, said Silverman is “a very special girl” and that while he hadn’t thought of fatherhood before, “now I know I feel good about it.”
Cowell was speaking at the world premiere of the film “One Direction: This Is Us” in London on Tuesday.
