Actress wins ‘Beautiful’ role
Jessie Mueller has nabbed a beautiful Broadway role – she’ll be playing celebrated songwriter Carole King in a new musical about the woman who wrote such hits as “It’s Too Late” and “You’ve Got a Friend.”
Producers said Monday that Mueller, who was last on Broadway opposite Matthew Broderick in “Nice Work If You Can Get It,” will lead “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical,” which starts previews Nov. 21 at the Steven Sondheim Theatre.
King composed dozens of 1960s hits with then-husband Gerry Goffin before emerging as a recording artist in her own right. Her 25 million-selling “Tapestry” launched the singer-songwriter era in 1971 and became the first real blockbuster album.
The new musical is written by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Douglas McGrath.
Gillibrand signs book deal
U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand has a deal to write a book that will be a memoir and a call to action for women.
Random House imprint Ballantine Bantam Dell tells the Associated Press that the New York Democrat’s currently untitled book will include stories about her upbringing and how she “integrates marriage and motherhood into a dynamic and demanding political career.”
Gillibrand says she admires books by and about women in professional life. She cites Facebook executive Sheryl Sandberg’s “Lean In” and Hillary Rodham Clinton’s “Living History.” Gillibrand succeeded Clinton in the U.S. Senate in 2009 after Clinton became U.S. secretary of state.
Bantam said Monday the Gillibrand book is scheduled for fall 2014. Financial terms haven’t been disclosed.
