Fall trend

A simple dress is a smart addition to the wardrobe, and shift dresses are a trend for fall. “The streamlined ’60s-inspired silhouette is having a moment. Details like crisp collars and mixed materials add a fresh touch,” reports the August issue of People Stylewatch.

Shift dresses appeared on the fall 2014 runways in New York as well as abroad; a couple of styles are shown here. Look soon for affordable styles landing in stores.

Dorm decorating

If you’re going to college this fall, here’s a decorating idea from interior designer/columnist Rosemary Sadez Friedmann: “First arrange and rearrange the furnishings in the room. Sometimes a bed on a different wall will make all the difference in making the room feel right. Try putting two desks back to back rather than each against a wall. The back-to-back desks also can serve as a visual room divider. Consider turning your bed into a day bed by using toss pillows against the wall during the day. This way the bed is a couch during the day and a bed at night.”

Drawn to light

They may not be for every room, but patterned lampshades can be a fun way to kick up your decor. We’ve spotted them in stripes, florals, paisleys and chevron, medallion and trellis prints. Solid colors are another way to go.
