Gleaming woodwork and plenty of it, comfortable chairs and soft lighting are just a few elements that make the Niagara Falls home of Artie Vanderpool and Scott Akdogan so cozy.
Furnishing the home didn’t come without challenges – French doors eating up wall space in the living room, to mention just one.
But the house has the sort of architectural details beloved by so many Western New Yorkers – and the people who visit them.
The hardwood floors “were in really, really good shape. We just had to clean them up,” Vanderpool says.
Here is a brief overview: Layout: Foyer leads to a living room with dining room off one end; sunroom off the other — all with French doors. Kitchen opens to a small back porch. Second floor has three bedrooms and a bath. An additional half bath is located in the basement.
Window treatments: Matchstick blinds throughout topped with natural duck cloth panels in the sunroom, green gauze draperies in the dining room.
Paint colors: Soft greens, including different shades in the dining room, living room and sunroom. Ralph Lauren’s “Wedgwood Rose” in the foyer. The terra-cotta shade runs upstairs as well.
Flooring: Hardwood floors, Turkish rugs, woven natural- fiber rug — with some layering going on.
Accessories/artwork: Blue-and-white ginger jars, vases, bowls; down-filled linen pillows; large painted tin pub sign; restored oilcloth advertising banner from Carborundum; framed artwork; sculpture; interesting pieces such as the top portion of an old ladder now used as a blanket rack.
Garden: A work-in-progress yet ready for this month’s garden tour. New this year is the 18-by-10 brick patio near the garage.
And convenient for cooking: Herbs growing in pots attached to the railing on the back porch — a few steps from the kitchen.
