BROCTON — Rodney Geiben was unanimously elected president of the Brocton Central School Board Thursday.

Geiben succeeds Susan Hardy. He has been on the board since 2004.

Other officers elected were: vice president, Hardy; second vice president, Camelle Belcher; and parliamentarian, Bobbi- Jo Gibbons.

In other matters, officials noted Middle/ High School Principal Stephen Keefe is also assuming the duties of principal of prekindergarten through sixth grade. His new role makes him the lone principal for the entire 690-student district, which employs 71 teachers. Keefe’s annual salary is $80,000, according to Betty Deland, district business executive.

The board also has decided to meet once a month during the 2009-10 school year, in addition to special meetings on the proposed consolidation of Fredonia and Brocton districts.

The regular meetings are scheduled for the third Thursday of each month at 7 p. m. in the high school board room.

The first of the special meetings on consolidation will feature a board workshop, getting under way at 7 p. m. Thursday in the Brocton High School auditorium. The meeting is open to the public. Board officials will discuss the study as well as the future direction toward consolidation. Robert Guiffreda, superintendent of Erie 2 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Board of Cooperative Educational Services, will be present at the meeting.

In other business:

The board set the annual nonresident student tuition for the 2009-10 year: kindergarten through sixth grades, $1,735 (second child in family, 50 percent of that rate); and seventh through 12th grades, $3,722 (second child, 50 percent of rate).

Kenneth Roberts of Portland was appointed head bus driver at an annual salary of $41,000. All board members approved the appointment. Thomas DeJoe abstained.

Fourteen youngsters to be paid through Chautauqua Works’ summer employment program will work on projects at Brocton schools.

The board’s next regular meeting is at 7 p. m. Aug. 20 in the high school.
