A small field, but a wider-than- usual audience, is shaping up for the $500,000 Prince of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie Race Track on July 12.

For the first time, the Ontario track’s richest race will be simulcast to the Western Regional Off- Track Betting Corp. network of betting parlors. It is part of a new agreement that will see OTB carry Fort Erie’s races, mostly on Mondays and Tuesdays, starting Monday.

“It’s been a long time coming. We’ve had discussions [with OTB] over the years and we’re very happy to be able to strike a deal and get our signal into Western New York,” said Daryl Wells Jr., Fort Erie publicity director.

Wells said he expects about five or six Canadian-bred 3-yearolds to enter the second jewel of Canada’s Triple Crown. The field is headed by Eye of the Leopard and Mr. Foricos Two U, the first two finishers in the Queen’s Plate at Woodbine on June 21.

Wells said Milwaukee Appeal, the filly who won the Woodbine Oaks and finished a close third in the Plate, is not nominated, but is a possible supplemental entrant for $12,500.

Other possible entrants are Plate runners Flip for the Coin (fifth) and Keino West (sixth), plus newcomers Ama Soul Man, Anna’s Soul, Dance Into Heaven, Gallant (supplemental), Ima Soul Miss, Perfect Shower, Soul of Nataka, Sibelius and Woodman’s Soul.

Entries close at 10 a. m. Wednesday with the post position draw at 4 p. m.
