NEW YORK (AP)—New York City is expanding the nation’s biggest July 4 display from a new vantage point—the Hudson River.

The celebration is moving back to Manhattan’s West Side for the first time since the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

Starting at 9:20 p. m. Saturday, more than 22 tons of fiery color will explode for a mile and a half over the river from six barges spanning 25 city blocks. This year’s show uses bigger shells that fly higher—as much as 1,000 feet in the air.

The West Side Highway will be closed to traffic starting in the early evening, open to pedestrians for viewing the fireworks. Other prime viewing locations are the Empire State Building, where tickets are going at $125.

The Intrepid Sea, Air& Space Museum at West 46th Street—a retired World War II aircraft carrier—will host the live NBC broadcast of the fireworks, with a show on its decks starting at 9 p. m., featuring the cast of Broadway’s “West Side Story” and other stars.
