NIAGARA FALLS — It happened again Tuesday night. For the third time in 2 and a half weeks, a prisoner in the new Niagara Falls jail was able to destroy a sprinkler and cause flooding.

Niagara Falls Police Supervisor John R. Chella said Wednesday that he met with Ciminelli Builders and Li-Ro Engineers and is hoping remediation work can begin next week.

Chella said they don’t know how much the cleanup and repairs will cost.

He said the three inmates responsible for the vandalism have been charged each with criminal mischief, and officials hope to make them accountable for the cost of cleanup and repairs.

Chella noted the sprinklers are required by state law in the new pod-style lockup.

“We think we have a solution and hope to implement the changes and start next week,” Chella said.

On Tuesday night, William A. Cauley, 28, of Buffalo, fought with officers and climbed into the toilet to pull apart the sprinkler system, deputies said. Firefighters were summoned to deal with the flooding.

On June 13, Michael Raymond, 24, of 77th Street, in jail for allegedly filing a false report, tore down the sprinkler, and several inches of water flooded the jail.

And on June 16, David Sandy, 27, of Chew Road, Sanborn — in jail on traffic charges—punched a sprinkler but officers were able to shut the water off quickly.
