L.T.'s Old Tyme Pizzeria: Hidden gem inside grocery story
Updated: August 21, 2010, 1:21 AM
We find our cheap eats in a lot of different places —from taverns and lunch counters to pizzerias and family restaurants. Now we have to add a new listing: grocery stores.
We visited the LT’s Old Tyme Pizzeria and Subs inside Dash’s on Main Street between Harris Hill and Shimerville roads, and found a large menu and plenty of tables in the nearby eating area. Subs are made to order (cold subs are $7.99 for large, $4.79 for regular; 15 hot selections for $8.49 for large, $5.29 for regular). Ten soup crocks offered turkey chili, Angus beef chili, minestrone, Manhattan clam chowder, Italian wedding, chicken noodle, vegetarian vegetable, Hungarian mushroom, French onion and beef barley and vegetable. Two large roasts, one beef, one turkey, were being carved for sandwiches—$ 6.95 for beef, $5.95 for turkey or chicken. You could also order chicken wings ($7.25 for a single order, $24.25 for a bucket) or fingers (single order $7.50).
Pizzas included the usuals (cheese, cheese and pepperoni, chicken finger) plus an intriguing selection of gourmet-style thin-crust pizzas. It was $2.99 a slice for such creations as “The Hollow,” made with truffle oil, mozzarella, mascarapone, sea salt and spices, or the Antique, with garlic oil, marinated artichokes, ricotta, crisp pancetta and tomato. And from 3 to 4 p. m. daily, and then again after 8 p. m., the slices are buy one, get one free. You can’t beat that!
We started out with a small 8-ounce cup of the turkey chili. It was hearty and steaming hot, but at $3.69, seemed a little expensive, the only item we chose that wasn’t a super value.
The turkey sub, at $4.79, was made with a generous portion of fresh deli meat on a soft sub roll. It was an excellent price for such a good-size sub.
A regular steak and sausage Philly steak sub was $5.29, a great value. It was made with the classic Philly mix of thin-sliced sirloin and melted mozzarella, with peppers, onions and mushrooms cooked to caramelized perfection.
A “slice” of the gourmet pizza turned out to be a full quarter of the pie, made on a thin, hand-shaped wheat crust. It was an inspired combination of chicken, mozzarella, caramelized onion, spinach, asiago, olive oil and herbs.
A few days after our visit, Jim Lion Jr., who recommended Dash’s in the first place, called to say that he’d just had a prime rib sandwich on a weck roll for lunch. The tender beef was cooked perfectly.
LT’s Old Tyme Pizzeria inside Dash’s Market is open from 6 a. m. to 9 p. m. daily. It is handicapped-accessible.
