Good morning, Buffalo: A quick look at what's happening today
Updated: August 21, 2010, 10:17 AM
Occasional showers are in the picture today, with thunderstorms likely in late
afternoon or early this evening. The high today will be in the mid-70s. Expect more of the
same for Sunday.
Ouzo-o-o-o good. The annual Greek Festival, featuring cultural documentaries,
lectures, films — and a whole bunch of delectables — and, music and dancing,
continues today and through 7 p.m. Sunday at Hellenic Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, 146
West Utica St. For a full listing, see www.buffalogreekfestival.org.
David Stapleton, owner of David Homes, who oversaw TV's "Extreme Makeover: Home
Edition" in Buffalo last year, will be the keynote speaker for the graduation of Empire State
College's Niagara Frontier Center, at 10 a.m. in Rockwell Hall at Buffalo State College.
Degrees will be conferred on 200 grads. Empire State was established in 1971 to offer
adult learners the opportunity to earn SUNY associate's, bachelor's and master's degrees. The
college serves more than 20,000 students worldwide, with 34 locations in the state as well as
online.
Some new faces will be among vendors on hand for today's debut of the fourth
season of the University Community Farmers Market at the University at Buffalo's South Campus.
Market hours are from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday through Oct. 16. Vendors will be located
at the Main Street sidewalk at Kenmore Avenue. Parking is free in the Allen, Main and Bailey
parking lots on the South Campus, directly behind the market, across the street from the
University Plaza. Fresh fruits and vegetables and artisan products are available.
Eastbound motorists on the Thruway planning to take the exit for westbound Route
33 can expect delays and detours. The exit ramp will be closed from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for
bridge-joint repair work and the inbound Kensington will be reduced to a single lane from
Union Road to the Thruway. A detour will route traffic to Route 33 westbound by way of Exit
50A to Cleveland Drive, then to Harlem Road. If the weather doesn't comply, the work will be
postponed.
The third annual "Jammin' in June" Music Festival at St. Amelia School, 2999
Eggert Road, Town of Tonawanda, gets under way at 5 p.m. today and noon Sunday. Featured are
eight local musical acts, including former American Idol finalist John Stevens, the Jeremy
Hoyle Band, Bleeding Hearts, West of the Mark, John Lamond Band, Push Button Theory, Frank
Grizanti and Terry Buchwald. Music is only part of the symphony of goodies. There will be a
kids zone, games of chance, raffles, pulled pork and Chiavetta's chicken dinners, pizza and
wings and a beverage tent. Admission is $5, with kids 12 and younger admitted free.
Elephants will command the lion's share of the attention today and Sunday at the
Buffalo Zoo during a promotion dubbed "Elephantastic Weekend." In addition to an open house in
the Elephant House from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days, there will be elephant painting
demonstrations by Surapa, the zoo's artistic elephant; an elephant watermelon-eating contest;
a question-and-answer session with the elephant keeper; and a raffle of elephant art. For
information, call 837-3900 or visit www.buffalozoo.org.
The annual State of Our Black Family forum takes place from noon to 4 p.m. in JFK
Community Center, Hickory and Clinton streets. The moderator is Marc L. Fuller, chairman of
the Stop the Violence Coalition. The forum, which is free and includes lunch, is sponsored by
the Community Action Organization of Erie County and UMOJA Inc.
Gloria J. Parks Community Center is hosting the first of what will be yearly
block parties, from noon to 5 p.m. at 3234 Main St., in the University District. Featured are
music, street art, children's activities, juggling, break-dancing and fencing demonstrations.
The West Side Neighborhood Housing Services also is in block party mode. The
Connecticut Street Festival, which runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 359 Connecticut, promises
food, music, prizes — and a mortgage checkup with specialists from West Side
Neighborhood Housing Services Western New York Law Center, Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo and
Legal Services for the Elderly and Disabled. For information, visit http://wsnhs.org.
Do veggies get shingles? The rooftop community garden is one spectacle of an active
weekend at the Broadway Market. A large-screen TV will be given away at 3 p.m. and vendors,
including Chuckie's Texas Hots, will serve up some amazing specials. Add live music to the
sauce and onions slathered on those tube steaks. More of the same, including a farmers market,
is in store at the East Side landmark on Sunday.
Westminster Early Childhood Programs is holding its 47th annual Children's Fair
and also celebrate the school's 60th birthday from noon to 1 p.m. at 724 Delaware Ave. The
Police Athletic League will be on hand to give away free bicycle helmets to the kids.
Those artistic types will be aping the works of the masters and others over at
the Albright-Knox Art Gallery during the annual "Art Alive: A Walking, Talking Art Contest,"
from noon to 2 p.m. These imaginative re-creations are a sight to be hold. A panel of judges,
including Buffalo News art critic Colin Dabkowski, will be on hand to judge the multifaceted
entries. Rain date is Sunday, noon to 2 p.m.
A bicycle rodeo hosted by the Niagara County Sheriff's Office is a major
attraction of today's annual Strawberry and Antiques festival of the History Center of
Niagara. The competition will be held from noon to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the Niagara
County Courthouse on Park Avenue in Lockport. Also, an old-time high-wheel bicycle will be
demonstrated by members of the American Wheelmen's Association. At the History Center, 215
Niagara St., activities will include historic craft demonstrations at 10 a.m., a beef on weck
lunch starting at 11 and music by the Barroom Buzzards at noon.
Heart of the City Neighborhoods, an organization committed to community
revitalization, is sponsoring its first-ever kickball tournament from 1 to 6 p.m. at LaSalle
Park, near the stage. Members of other not-for-profits and businesses will return to the old
days of the playground in an event designed to promote community development on the Lower
West Side.
