Good morning, Buffalo: A quick look at what's happening today

Occasional showers are in the picture today, with thunderstorms likely in late

afternoon or early this evening. The high today will be in the mid-70s. Expect more of the

same for Sunday.

Ouzo-o-o-o good. The annual Greek Festival, featuring cultural documentaries,

lectures, films &#8212 and a whole bunch of delectables &#8212 and, music and dancing,

continues today and through 7 p.m. Sunday at Hellenic Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, 146

David Stapleton, owner of David Homes, who oversaw TV's "Extreme Makeover: Home

Edition" in Buffalo last year, will be the keynote speaker for the graduation of Empire State

College's Niagara Frontier Center, at 10 a.m. in Rockwell Hall at Buffalo State College.

Degrees will be conferred on 200 grads. Empire State was established in 1971 to offer

adult learners the opportunity to earn SUNY associate's, bachelor's and master's degrees. The

college serves more than 20,000 students worldwide, with 34 locations in the state as well as

online.

Some new faces will be among vendors on hand for today's debut of the fourth

season of the University Community Farmers Market at the University at Buffalo's South Campus.

Market hours are from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday through Oct. 16. Vendors will be located

at the Main Street sidewalk at Kenmore Avenue. Parking is free in the Allen, Main and Bailey

parking lots on the South Campus, directly behind the market, across the street from the

University Plaza. Fresh fruits and vegetables and artisan products are available.

Eastbound motorists on the Thruway planning to take the exit for westbound Route

33 can expect delays and detours. The exit ramp will be closed from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for

bridge-joint repair work and the inbound Kensington will be reduced to a single lane from

Union Road to the Thruway. A detour will route traffic to Route 33 westbound by way of Exit

50A to Cleveland Drive, then to Harlem Road. If the weather doesn't comply, the work will be

postponed.

The third annual "Jammin' in June" Music Festival at St. Amelia School, 2999

Eggert Road, Town of Tonawanda, gets under way at 5 p.m. today and noon Sunday. Featured are

eight local musical acts, including former American Idol finalist John Stevens, the Jeremy

Hoyle Band, Bleeding Hearts, West of the Mark, John Lamond Band, Push Button Theory, Frank

Grizanti and Terry Buchwald. Music is only part of the symphony of goodies. There will be a

kids zone, games of chance, raffles, pulled pork and Chiavetta's chicken dinners, pizza and

wings and a beverage tent. Admission is $5, with kids 12 and younger admitted free.

Elephants will command the lion's share of the attention today and Sunday at the

Buffalo Zoo during a promotion dubbed "Elephantastic Weekend." In addition to an open house in

the Elephant House from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days, there will be elephant painting

demonstrations by Surapa, the zoo's artistic elephant; an elephant watermelon-eating contest;

a question-and-answer session with the elephant keeper; and a raffle of elephant art. For

The annual State of Our Black Family forum takes place from noon to 4 p.m. in JFK

Community Center, Hickory and Clinton streets. The moderator is Marc L. Fuller, chairman of

the Stop the Violence Coalition. The forum, which is free and includes lunch, is sponsored by

the Community Action Organization of Erie County and UMOJA Inc.

Gloria J. Parks Community Center is hosting the first of what will be yearly

block parties, from noon to 5 p.m. at 3234 Main St., in the University District. Featured are

music, street art, children's activities, juggling, break-dancing and fencing demonstrations.

The West Side Neighborhood Housing Services also is in block party mode. The

Connecticut Street Festival, which runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 359 Connecticut, promises

food, music, prizes &#8212 and a mortgage checkup with specialists from West Side

Neighborhood Housing Services Western New York Law Center, Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo and

Legal Services for the Elderly and Disabled. For information, visit http://wsnhs.org.

Do veggies get shingles? The rooftop community garden is one spectacle of an active

weekend at the Broadway Market. A large-screen TV will be given away at 3 p.m. and vendors,

including Chuckie's Texas Hots, will serve up some amazing specials. Add live music to the

sauce and onions slathered on those tube steaks. More of the same, including a farmers market,

is in store at the East Side landmark on Sunday.

Westminster Early Childhood Programs is holding its 47th annual Children's Fair

and also celebrate the school's 60th birthday from noon to 1 p.m. at 724 Delaware Ave. The

Police Athletic League will be on hand to give away free bicycle helmets to the kids.

Those artistic types will be aping the works of the masters and others over at

the Albright-Knox Art Gallery during the annual "Art Alive: A Walking, Talking Art Contest,"

from noon to 2 p.m. These imaginative re-creations are a sight to be hold. A panel of judges,

including Buffalo News art critic Colin Dabkowski, will be on hand to judge the multifaceted

entries. Rain date is Sunday, noon to 2 p.m.

A bicycle rodeo hosted by the Niagara County Sheriff's Office is a major

attraction of today's annual Strawberry and Antiques festival of the History Center of

Niagara. The competition will be held from noon to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the Niagara

County Courthouse on Park Avenue in Lockport. Also, an old-time high-wheel bicycle will be

demonstrated by members of the American Wheelmen's Association. At the History Center, 215

Niagara St., activities will include historic craft demonstrations at 10 a.m., a beef on weck

lunch starting at 11 and music by the Barroom Buzzards at noon.

Heart of the City Neighborhoods, an organization committed to community

revitalization, is sponsoring its first-ever kickball tournament from 1 to 6 p.m. at LaSalle

Park, near the stage. Members of other not-for-profits and businesses will return to the old

days of the playground in an event designed to promote community development on the Lower

West Side.
