Fire investigators are trying to determine what sparked an early Saturday morning blaze that caused tens of thousands of dollars damage to a South Buffalo Catholic school.

Buffalo firefighters were called just after 3 a. m. to Ambrose Catholic Academy at 260 Okell St.

“The major damage was done to the hallway of the school on the second floor,” said Monsignor David Lee, pastor of St. Ambrose Catholic Church.

Insurance adjusters were at the school later Saturday, Lee said, so the cost of the damage was unclear. Fire officials, however, estimated damage to be $150,000 to the building and $25,000 to its contents.

“Most of the work now will be doing the cleanup, which will take several weeks,” Lee said. “We’ve been assured the cleanup will be done in time for school to start in September.”

One firefighter suffered a neck injury while battling the blaze, fire officials said.
