Sacred Heart Mass

Bishop Edward U. Kmiec of the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo will celebrate Mass at noon Sunday for the 100th anniversary of Sacred Heart Church, 43 Maple Ave., Portville.

Sacred Heart parish merged with St. Mary of the Angels parish in 2007, but the Sacred Heart church building remains as an oratory, available for occasional Masses, baptisms, weddings and funerals.

Kmiec also will bless two fountains in Portville named after priests.

Couple to speak

“Prophetic Explosion: Demonstrating the Supernatural,” featuring Jane and Bill Hamon, will be offered Thursday through Aug. 2 in Sword of the Spirit Ministries, 300 Kensington Ave. Services will be at 7 p. m. Thursday through Saturday daily and at 10 a. m. Aug. 2.

Jane Hamon also will be guest speaker at the Women of Destiny regional prayer breakfast at 8:30 a. m. next Saturday in the Holiday Inn, 1881 Niagara Falls Blvd., Amherst.

Collection to be taken

A collection in area Catholic parishes will be taken in August for the Catholic League for Religious Assistance to Poland.

The collection supports the education of priests at the Pontifical College and the Pontifical Institute in Rome and the Polish Seminary in Paris.

Ministry renewal set

Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 263 Claremont Ave., Town of Tonawanda, will host an evening for ministry renewal at 7 p. m. Aug. 9, featuring Michael John Poirer. The renewal will include singing, prayers and Eucharistic adoration.

Center hosts talks

Paul Kurtz, founder and chairman of the Center for Inquiry and University at Buffalo professor emeritus of philosophy, will discuss humanistic ethical values, separation of church and state and the role of secular humanism in politics and society during a series of talks Friday and next Saturday in the center, 1310 Sweet Home Road, Amherst.

The talks are at 1 p. m. Friday on “Metanature,” at 3 p. m. Friday on “The Turbulent Universe: The Biosphere, Physical Universe and Human Affairs,” and at 3 p. m. next Saturday on “Ethical Choice in a Contingent Universe.”
