Good morning, Buffalo: A quick look at what's happening today

It looks like spring is making a comeback &#8212 and it's about time. The day will

be mostly sunny and feature a high temperature near 62 degrees. Some clouds will roll in by

nightfall, with a low of about 44 degrees. Sunday will be even better &#8212

sunny, with a high of 67 degrees.

Catch this: About 400 Frisbee-throwers from throughout the East are in town to

compete in the Ultimate Players Association High School Eastern Championships. The fling-fest

is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Nike Base, 2982 Lakeview Road, Town of Hamburg.

Competing are 11 girls teams and 18 open teams. Championships resume at 8:30 a.m. Sunday and

continue until 4 p.m.

Today is Give Your Stuff Away Day &#8212 an unofficial movement to help people get

things they need, help others get rid of things they don't need and reduce the amount of trash

that ends up in landfills. Mike Morone of North Chili, who hatched this mini-revolution,

encourages folks to spread the word to neighbors and municipalities, then put out valuable

items in good condition for donation and check out stuff your neighbor is offering. A crash

course on details, guidelines and prohibited items is available at

The life of Malcolm X will be celebrated from 3 to 5 p.m. in Frank E.

Merriweather Library, 332 E. Utica St. The event, sponsored by Malika Kambe Kambe Umfazi

Sorority, includes scheduled performances by Daughters of Creative Sound and the Njozi

Ensemble!

Former Buffalo Bills quarterback and NFL Hall-of-Famer Jim Kelly will be the

keynote speaker at the Niagara County Community College commencement ceremony at

10 a.m. in the college gym, 3111 Saunders Settlement Road, Sanborn. A record 360 graduates

are scheduled to walk across the stage to receive their degrees. About 2,000 guests are expected

to fill the gymnasium and the college auditorium, where a video feed will be provided to

accommodate the spillover crowd.

Brenda McDuffie, president and CEO of the Buffalo Urban League, will be the

speaker when the Trocaire College commencement gets under way at 10:30 a.m. in the Center for

the Arts on the University at Buffalo North Campus. The college is scheduled to present an

honorary doctorate to Anthony N. Diina, president of Metrodata Services Inc. & Insight

Associates Inc. for his leadership in business and public service. Also, 48 Phi Theta Kappa

Honor Society members will be graduating. Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society

for two-year colleges, whose members are required to carry a cumulative 3.5 grade point

average or better.

Clip 'N Dale's pet-grooming salon, 750 Kenmore Ave., is holding a fundraiser from

noon to 6 p.m. for the Banfield Charitable Trust &#8212 the organization the provides

emergency and critical veterinary care to pet owners in need. Get photographed with your pet,

check out exotic animals and myriad demonstrations, get your pet vaccinated or, introduce

Rover to a play group. A bake sale and treats also are on the menu. For more information,

Joining the growing number of farmers markets open for the season is the Olean

Farmers Market, located at the Jamestown Community College lot, 260 N. Union St. The market

operates from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays through Oct. 30. Available are fruits,

vegetables, herbs, hanging baskets, cut flowers, baked goods, handmade crafts, jams and

jellies, bison meat and poultry, honey and maple products. Oh yes, and eggs, too.

Idol time on your hands? Tickets go on sale today for the "Idols LIVE" tour,

which won't hit HSBC Arena for a few months &#8212 at 7:30 p.m. Friday Sept. 10. The cast

includes Texan Tim Urban, an Idol contestant with local ties. He is the grandson of Joan Urban

Nowland and Jerry Nowland of Hamburg, and the nephew of John Urban, a nurse at Buffalo General

Hospital, and his wife, Joanne, who works for Medtronics. Tim's dad, David, was a 1977

graduate of Frontier High School and a 1981 graduate of UB. Urban finished seventh in Season 9

of the popular show. he will join other Top 10 finalists at HSBC, including Aaron Kelly,

Andrew Garcia, Casey James, Crystal Bowersox, Didi Benami, Katie Stevens, Lee DeWyze, Michael
