Pedestrian struck, killed at Lockport intersection

LOCKPORT — An 85-year-old city woman died this morning after she was struck by a sport
utility vehicle while crossing the intersection at Walnut and Cottage streets.
The man whose SUV struck her has not been charged, although the case remains under
investigation, city police said.
Virginia Barnwell, of Spalding Street, was walking north in the crosswalk on Cottage Street
at about 10 a.m. when she was by an SUV driven by Robert Payne Sr., 70, of Wright Corners,
Traffic Capt. Michael Neithe said.
Payne was making a turn from Cottage Street onto Walnut Street when he struck Barnwell,
Neithe said.
City firefighters took Barnwell to Eastern Niagara Hospital, where she was pronounced dead
a short time later.
Payne was not injured.
