Possible homicide, attempted suicide involving elderly couple being investigated
Updated: August 21, 2010, 9:53 AM
Amherst police are investigating a report of the possible homicide and attempted suicide of an elderly couple this morning at the Amberleigh Retirement Community on Maple Road in Williamsville.
Virginia Bunz, 89, was found dead in her apartment at 10:25 a.m. with John Bunz, 90, who
was found with self-inflicted wounds, police said. He was taken to Erie County Medical Center
for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, police reported. A hospital spokesman said
Bunz was still being evaluated early this afternoon.
Police offered no other information, saying the incident remains under investigation.
Frank Miosi, executive director of Amberleigh, said it's unclear what exactly happened.
"It may also be that he tried to kill himself after seeing her dead. They were close," he
said.
Police did not reveal details about the nature of the wounds, but Miosi said they did not
involve a shooting.
The retirement community is home to 260 people.
"We're treating it as an isolated incident. There was no harm to anyone else," Miosi said.
